Radiohead, The Grim Reaper Of The Record Industry

How do you kill the record industry? How does one go about stopping a once unstoppable force? Stop feeding it!
Radiohead is doing that exact thing with their next album, In Rainbows, they are skipping the record labels and releasing the album themselves. But here is the kicker, they are not asking for any money. WHAT?! That’s right no money, you pay as much as you want. If you want to pay ZERO you pay zero, if you want to ONE MILLION dollars/Euros you can. It really is up to you.
Besides the fact I like the idea of free music I think this is brilliant. What is the best way to increase ticket sales at concerts, having more people listening to your music. How do you get more people to listen to your music, give it away! Radiohead isn’t the first band to do this. Prince did this with his last album… People called him many things none of them flattering in the record industry. But what happened next shut them all up, he proceeded to sell out 21 concerts in a row. I think that covers his loses.
Record companies should have seen this coming, the death of music for sale. Even with the success of I-tunes there will come a time when music is going to become a loss leader. Bands and record executives alike will make more money off of the concerts if more people come to the concerts. Its not hard to figure out. With even the best musical acts making very little off their record sales and a whole lot of their concerts, why would artist even care about selling them if they could fill concert halls around the globe.
Radiohead is doing the right thing, a revolutionary thing. A band with this much global popularity it is no wonder record companies around the world are hearing their swan song.
