This is a simple prank with huge returns.  If done correctly their is no harm done to the computer but the person will think everything has gone to hell.  So what do you do?

  1.  Open the computer case
  2. Take out the ram
  3. Place a piece of tape on one side of the ram
  4. Place the Ram back in
  5. Walk away

If done correctly the computer will not boot.  No harm is done to the ram or the computer but they wont know that.  The key is to let this go as far as possible.  Don’t let them order a new computer, well I guess you can but I wouldn’t.
This involves opening the case
Take a small strip of tape…. Stick it to one side of t he ram.. No harm will come to the computer but it sure as hell wont boot…. The IT guy will be totally stumped. Took my teacher 3 days to figure out what was wrong with his computer… some turd leaked it to him that we did something to the ram

How does this work? Is there anything specific the tape should be covering or is it just anywhere on the RAM?

@ Dan – wouldn’t you assume that you should cover the pins with the tape? It’s not rocket science here…

@SomeDude – I’d be inclined to gently clean the contacts of the module after mercilessly torturing said victim… lol

This prank reminds me of a Dell machine I had a hell of a time with. It was experiencing random crashes, which prompted me to run a RAM Diagnostic. This failed, so my next step was to try reseating the modules… it was then that I noticed that a Dell label had become detached from the module and fallen in between the contacts in the slot! I can’t believe Dell would use an adhesive which obviously degrades due to heat! Ridiculous…
Plus, the machine in question was only a year old.
